The State Cabinet actually decided on July 13, 2022 to gazette the abandoned Mamut copper mine into a nature reserve under the Parks Enactment 1984. By Sept 19-30, 50 researchers from 13 universities mounted a Mamut Scientific Expedition under State orders, with a view to prepare a Management Plan under Sabah Parks.

Sabah Parks will conduct scientific studies on the former Mamut copper mine area from September 19 to 30 to prepare for its gazettement as a nature reserve. The studies will involve 50 researchers from various institutions and agencies to draw up development and management plans for the area.
