I recently broke my iPhone 3G screen. I've had it replaced, and I still have the broken screen. Seems like the digitizer on that screen is fine and could be reused. I would like to separate the digitizer from the glass and try to do some hacks with it. Can I use a heat gun to take it apart from the glass, or will this damage the digitizer?

Iphone lcd/glass separation is really not very difficult. Not when compared to samsungs anyway. I generally start by heating up the plastic frame on the screen a bit, then using a flat pry tool, gently pull it away from the glass. After removing the frame, lay the assembly face down on a hot plate. I set my to 70 degrees celcius.

I solved it taking the iPhone back to the Apple Store (3 years old, not covered by warranty). They replaced my iPhone with a refurbished one in 10 minutes for free. I think this is the best solution. Otherwise you can try to fix it on your own. The issue here is that the battery is collapsing and expanding, pushing your screen away from the case.

If you do this correctly, you should hear a pop sound as the screen sits back into place. If you are timed about pressing on your screen, a local repair shop should be able to get the screen back into place. The only thing that would keep the screen from sitting back in place is if it's separating from the plastic bezel around the screen.

Best thing would be take a couple of pics and ask for replacement. Factories use cold pressed glueing but if you try removing the bezel completely chances are to damage screen painting. For smaller repairs with limited damage i use a drop superglue after carefully masking the glass. - iPhone 6

I recommend trying on a cheap screen like the iphone 4 a few times prior to attempting say, an iPhone 5c or Galaxy S4 for obvious reasons. Keep in mind that iPhone screens are so inexpensive comparatively speaking that there are probably many things you could be doing with your time other than attempting this.
